Next Race

Don't let the "marathon" name scare you though, I'm only doing the half! And it's on 10-10-10!
I'd been contemplating doing a different half marathon in Healdsburg on Oct. 30th, but I contemplated too long and the race filled up. So sad....but then I found this one and it's $25 cheaper and it's put on by the same group that did the Windsor Half Marathon that I did in May. The only complaint I had with them was that they gave away finisher hats instead of medals. I checked the "this is included in your registration fee list" and it noted that a medal is given at the end of this one though. Yipee!

Another Example of How Ridiculous We Are

Remember when I wrote about so many of the ways that we are ridiculous? Well I have another perfect example:

I'm not sure how we got on this topic, but Jacob mentioned something about how I need to get a sugar daddy to buy us things and the conversation went something like this:

Jake: I'm sure you could find one in the city. You could go to...what's that place called? the co...com

Me: The commissary?? That's what they call the grocery stores on military bases.

Jake: Yeah! But no, I meant one of those places where you can get dried goods.

Me: Oh, like on Oregon Trail?!!

Jake: Yeah, what's that called?

Me: I don't know, I think it's just called the General Store.

Jake: No, I think it has another name.

Me: Yeah, maybe.

Jake: Let's call Miltay (aka Mallory, my sister)

Replayed conversation to Miltay

Miltay: Um, I think it's called the General Store

She then promised to do some research and report back if she found anything.

Does anyone have an idea?

More Salsa & Jalapeno Hands

We did it again. We made MORE salsa that could burn your tongue off. The last batches we made were pretty green due to all the jalapeno peppers we used, so we decided to go a different route this time and made a red salsa. I think I prefer these to the last batches, but they're still unbearably hot. They have a wonderful taste though.

On a somewhat related note, does anyone else suffer from jalapeno hands? I'm super sensitive to the oils in the peppers and any time I so much as dice up one pepper I'm in pain for the rest of the day. It's always intensified after I take a shower and they burn so bad that I have to hold a bag of frozen vegetables in order to get any type of relief. I've googled remedies to this and I've tried them all. Nothing works. I suppose I could wear gloves when I cut them up, but that's such a hassle.

After we made salsa the other day Jake failed to wash his hands. I didn't realize this until we'd been holding hands and mine began to get the burning sensation. It then got a million times worse after I drove the car home that night with the contaminated steering wheel. Oh the pain! Maybe I'll go ahead and invest in a box of those silly gloves before our next salsa making session.

I was informed the other day that once the habanero peppers are ready (we just discovered that they're growing!) I will be required to eat one. Jake has told his whole family that I will take on this task and apparently it's going to be a big production. I'm scared out of my mind, but will probably do it because I rarely turn down dares that involve eating. Wish me luck!

Bodega Bay

Jake and I ventured out to Bodega Bay this past Saturday. It's only about 2 hours away and is fairly close to Santa Rosa. We needed to go down to SR anyway to run a few errands so we took care of the boring things and then set off to Bodega Bay for dinner.

ship wreck

Our first stop was this cute taffy store.

Then we went to a souvenir shop and asked a store owner for a dinner recommendation. She pointed us towards a restaurant that she claimed had good food, but was less expensive than some of the other places in town. So we went and were severely disappointed. If this place was less expensive than the other places, I can't even imagine how ridiculous they must have been. I was most perturbed that I wasted one of my non vegan meals on salmon that was smothered in a not so great lemon aioli sauce and sat upon a "potato cake". FYI, the potato cake was a fancy name for hash browns. I was starving though so I ate all of it (and some of Jake's). I'd run 8 miles that morning so I was willing to devour anything ;) We had a fun time quietly laughing at a girl seated nearby. She had a glob of butter on her chin during her entire meal, but the people at her table didn't have the nerve to mention it to her. It's the little things in life that we find amusing....

After dinner we headed to the ocean to take in some nice views. Instead we got this:

We couldn't see a thing so we quickly got back into the car (it was freezing) and headed back into town. We stopped here before making our way back home:

These are our "scared" faces.

Despite the bad food and the fog, we had a wonderful time and hope to go back in the near future. It was so fun to spend the day together. We've hardly seen each other at all the past few weeks :( Next weekend we're going to Chico for a friend's wedding and we'll be celebrating our 1st anniversary so I'm sure we'll have some great pictures from that adventure!

My New Brother

My parents adopted a new baby! They named him Gilbert Grape and they think he's 3 or 4 months old. He's healed now, but they were told he had a broken leg and had to wear a little cast for a while :(

We have a special place in our hearts for tuxedo cats and based on what I've heard, this little man is a mixture of our two previous tuxedo cats. He has the distinguished eyes of Ace and the little nose/mouth of Whippie. I've been told he has an old soul (like Ace), but loves to be loved on (like Whippie).

I can't wait to meet this little fellow when I go home for Christmas. If he weren't the perfect cat for my family then I might even bring him back in my suitcase, but I'm not mean enough to take away the new love of their lives.

Anthro Kitchen Goodies

This new diet we're trying is causing me to be in the kitchen a lot more. Most days I don't really mind, but sometimes I'm tired and not in a cooking mood. I'm sure these items from Anthropologie would make the task a little more fun.....

Can I just move into an Anthropolgie store??

Dangerous Salsa

The weekend before last Jake picked about a million peppers and we made another attempt at creating some salsa. Jake grilled the peppers this time and went to work dicing and blending. I don't have any pictures of the mess or the end product, but this stuff was h-o-t-t HOT. I mean really, really hot. Take the hottest salsa you've ever had at a restaurant or purchased at the store and multiply that by a million. It is delicious. This turned out to be a problem though because once you start eating eat you can't stop. By the time you do FORCE yourself to stop you are sweating, tearing up a bit, and you basically wish you could cut your tongue off. Well, that's been my experience anyway. And FYI, I can eat spicy food like I was born and raised in Mexico so don't think I'm just wimping out on the salsa.

On a semi related vegetation note, Jake also picked these grapes from the backyard!

Our New (Semi) Vegan Diet

I have a friend at work who has a son that works on some organic farms. The owners of the farms are really into eating healthy and living a vegan lifestyle. They gave my friend's son packets and brochures about vegan-ism and when she started telling me about it I became really interested so she brought me the info to read. And it kind of changed my life.

If you know me then you know I love food. All food. Mass quantities of food. I'm most definitely a "live to eat" person as opposed to one that "eats to live". And I don't think that has changed, but I'm much more aware of what I'm eating now and I'm trying to greatly reduce the amount of animal products that I take in.

I don't want to get all preachy about this because I don't want to be responsible for making someone else change their entire life, but the short version of why this change came about is due to the disgusting things I saw in the literature. I'm definitely not an animal rights activist and feel the need to emphasize this to people when I mention the vegan thing. I feel that the animals are here so that we can eat them, and yes, I feel bad that they live in awful conditions, but that's not what's making me convert. It's the fact that I feel the bad conditions they're living in are gross and I want to ingest as little of it as possible. This does not mean that I'm cutting it out completely and here are reasons why:

1. It's hard. A lot of things have eggs and milk in them and while I am more conscious of how much I'm consuming, I will never cut it out completely.

2. I don't want to be rude. If I go to someones house to eat I will definitely eat anything that is provided. And I'll enjoy it. You only live once and I do intend to still enjoy food, I just hope to become healthier and perhaps live a little longer by eating better.

3. There aren't any vegan restaurants around these parts and let's face it, I'm not going to eat every meal at home. I will make an effort to order more vegetarian meals when we eat out, but I'm not making it a rule to do so on every occasion.

You might be wondering, "how does your poor husband feel about this?" Well he was hesitant about the idea at first, but I think he's willing to give it a shot. And since he's been out of town the past couple of months and his diet has consisted mostly of Burger King and In and Out, I think he's welcoming the idea of change ;)

And to be honest, the changes aren't that big. I've never really purchased red meat or pork and most meals I make are things that work just fine without meat. The hardest thing is that I can't be lazy about dinner anymore. It requires more preparation and actual "cooking." No more frozen pizzas or quick trips to Taco Bell :(

I've actually made a lot of good recipes lately and I'll post some when I have more time, but here's a glimpse at what I purchased at Whole Foods a couple of weeks ago:

And here's my review of the products:

  • Soy Pudding: wonderful
  • Soy yogurt: I like the key lime flavor, but not any of the others :(
  • Tofu: not a fan. I've tried it a few different ways and I think I'll continue to use it in recipes that use it as a substitute for cheese, but not as a substitute for meat.
  • Smart Ground and the sausage right underneath it: haven't tried yet
  • Soy Cheese:
  • Mozzarella: good
  • Cheddar: only good in small quantities
  • Almond Milk: wonderful!
  • Earth Balance Butter: good
I recently read that too much soy is bad for you so I suppose I'll be cutting some of this out. We've also been eating a lot of beans and pasta. And vegetables of course.

Unfortunately Whole Foods is about an hour and a half away so I cannot go every week. The local Safeway has some of these products, but not many of them so we'll see how this goes....Wish me luck!

The Lake County Fair

We spent Friday and Saturday night at the Lake County Fair and had a lot of fun. On Friday night we went to the Miss Lake County pageant. Jake's uncle introduced the show and the picture below is of him and Miss California!

We only stayed for a little while though because we wanted to catch the demolition derby. It did not disappoint.

Don't worry...nobody was harmed in the fire.

On Saturday night we went to see The Lost Boys!

Then Jake did this jumpy thing.

It was really difficult to get any good pictures of this, but he seemed to have fun flipping about in the air.
